Your Car Insurance Could Be Invalid If You Drive During Lockdown

Since the Lockdown was mandated on November 5, people have been told not to make any non-essential journeys. The lockdown is in place until December 2 meaning you are expected to meet these conditions for four weeks.

If you are caught making non-essential journeys during this lockdown period you could receive a £200 fine.

However, this isn’t the only cost you might face according to The Mirror. They have said that if you make a non-essential car journey during the lockdown period, you could be making a rather costly mistake as you may find that your insurance isn’t valid if you have an accident.

Florence Codjoe, of website Uswitch.com, said: “You could end up paying thousands for repairs.

"If you’re unsure about cover during lockdown speak to your insurer for clarification.”

Additionally, she warned that you shouldn’t cancel your insurance policy unless you have off-street parking. This is because it is illegal to park your car on the side of the road without a policy in place.

The £200 fine you will face for non-essential journeys will be halved if you pay it within 14 days. However, if you repeatedly get caught your fine will be double up to the value of £6.400 if you continue to violate this law.

Specialist motoring lawyer Nick Freema said: “Essential travel is largely defined as shopping for necessities, picking up medical supplies, caring for a vulnerable person and getting to and from work if you cannot do so from home.”

He added: “Anything else is not really acceptable. If you have an accident and can’t prove your journey was essential your insurance may be void.”

John Neill, of Castle Insurance Services, said: “If it’s a non-essential journey and being used outside the terms of the policy then there may be grounds for an insurer to reject a claim.”
